Schubert-Lorelei Sängerchor
The Club’s male singing group, the Schubertchor, was formed in 1931, inspired by Franz Schubert, whose musical catalog includes over two hundred vocal works.
A women’s group, the Lorelei was established years later. The ladies performed as a solo group and often with the men for mixed compositions. Today both groups perform as one chorus.
Competition among other German clubs in New England was the early, natural outgrowth of this love for singing. The Schubertchor was the leading contender in these summer events earning many trophies and awards which can be seen in our rehearsal room. During those formative years, the musical direction was provided by Richard Alberg and in later years by his son Richard.
Our current conductor is Noel Velasco, accompanied on piano with Gigi Mitchell-Velasco. Both are classically trained, linternationally acclaimed musicians. We are indeed blessed to have their talents and inspiration for the music we all enjoy!
The Chorus presents two performances every year, at Christmas and in Spring. A typical program consists of a lively medley of German folk songs, some classical pieces by Mozart, Schubert or the like - and some fun tunes from Broadway, Hollywood and elsewhere - that everyone will recognize and enjoy.
We are always looking for new members and our only requirement is a love of German song.
