Adult German Language Classes

Learn the German language in a fun, relaxing, and intimate environment.

Learn German doesn't have to be a daunting challenge. Come learn at the German American Cultural Society of Rhode Island, where we offer classes for all levels of learners. Whether you are brand new to learning German or already have some experience, we have a class for you. Our class-sizes are small ensuring you will get the personal attention you need to advance your German language skills.

Class Levels Available


Begins week of Sept. 9, 2024

Classes are held every Wednesday evening for 12 weeks at the GACS.

Advanced Beginner

Classes are held every Thursday evening for 12 weeks at the GACS.

Meet the Teachers


Bärbel Tully is a native German speaker, who grew up in Munich, Germany. She earned both her BS in Business Management and her Master of Arts in Teaching at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. She currently teaches German, Business, and Special Education at Cranston High School East. Her introductory German class is a concurrent dual enrollment class taught in partnership with the University of Rhode Island, and provides high school students with the opportunity to earn free college credit upon successful completion of the class.

Advanced Beginner and Advanced Levels

Sonja Arentsen is a native German speaker who grew up in Chile and Germany. She studied modern languages at Villanova University and has her teacher’s certification from Providence College. She has taught in the public and private schools in Rhode Island and has run her own language school, KinderLingua. Ms. Arentsen has been teaching German in the GACSRI Language Program since 2014. 


Tuition is $225 per semester.*

*GACS Members and returning students pay just $205 for tuition.

Registering students should bring their tuition payment (cash or check) to their first day of classes.
